Learn MoreA CGM will track glucose levels 24 hours a day keeping your patients informed at all times about their results. They provide a complete overview of blood sugar levels in real-time which helps eliminate the “guessing game”, prevent fewer episodes of hypoglycemia, improve blood sugar control, and achieve an optimal A1C level.
A Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM) is a device that tracks blood sugar levels continuously day and night. It collects readings automatically every 5 to 15 minutes, and helps detect trends and patterns that give the patient a more complete picture of their diabetes. The data can help patients and their providers find ways to better manage the condition. Several devices are available for adults and children. A prescription from a doctor is required to get one.

The tiny glucose sensor (filament) is inserted under the skin, usually on the belly or arm. The sensor measures the interstitial glucose level, which is the glucose found in the fluid between the cells. The sensor tests glucose every few minutes. It wirelessly sends the information to a monitor.
With some systems, a compatible smart device with the CGM system app can serve as the monitor. The monitor will display current glucose levels, as well as historical trends in levels, and can also be set to send custom alerts to the user when certain glucose thresholds are reached.
Most sensors can only be worn for 10 to 14 days, depending on the manufacturer’s FDA approval.
Yes, most CGM’s have apps that enable you to use your phone as the receiver.
A blood glucose meter only provides a brief “snapshot” of your glucose level at a single moment in time. A CGM gives the patient a greater view of their glucose trends. It can provide valuable insight about a patients glucose levels, rate and direction of change, giving them additional insight to proactively manage their diabetes like:
- How much insulin they should take
- An exercise plan that’s right for them
- The number of meals and snacks they need each day
- The correct types and doses of medications
Many insurances, including Medicare cover CGMs. Patients must meet certain criteria to qualify. Speak with a GEMCO Medical representative about the requirements and ask about our Insulin Pump & CGM Product Guide with Billing Overview.
